Aptitude[va+na]

  • EE paper I has both formula based and concept based questions.
  •  Compared to last year, in Measurements weightage has come down while it is increased in Analog circuits and Power Electronics.
  •  In remaining topics IIT Roorkee has followed almost the same weightage compared to last year.
    • In general the overall difficulty level of the paper is easy than last year.
    • Weightage given to Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Power systems was more.
    • analog, digital, machines problems are easy
    • General Aptitude was medium in comparison. Tough Topics were Engineering Mathematics, Signals & Systems, Control Systems, Power Electronics and Power systems.
  •  EE paper-II has more concept based questions.
  • Compared to last year, in Networks and Power systems weightage has come down while it is increased in Analog circuits, Digital circuits, Control systems and Power electronics.
  • In remaining topics IIT Roorkee has followed almost the same weightage compared to last year.
  • In general the overall difficulty level of the paper is moderate than last year.

Both sets had few questions which tested basic understanding of concepts and required analytical thinking.

There were a few questions that were directly based on the concepts learnt in basic Physics and Mathematics before graduation.

There were certain questions which were lengthy and calculation intensive and would take a long time to solve using Virtual Calculator.

Also there were a few questions which could lead to false thinking and force the student to commit mistake.

Questions were very basic and the weightage of Analog Electronics improved from last year

As always the weightage of Control Systems was considerable but it was heartening to see that all chapters found their representation in this year’s exam.
The weightage of Digital Electronics was same as previous years i.e. 3-5 marks but what was surprising to see that there was no question from Sequential Logic Circuits in Session-1 but it is considered as toughest and most important chapter in Digital Electronics. So, we need to get rid of any assumptions that we make and treat each chapter equally.

Like GATE-2016 the weightage of Electrical Machines was highest amongst all the technical subjects. But there was one surprising fact that Transformers had least weightage though in previous years had highest weightage.
There were certain questions that could not be easily solved using Virtual Calculator and were classic example of Electrical Machines Questions which are lengthy and calculation intensive. Synchronous Machines was the most dominant of all the chapters. So, once again Machines proved that it is indeed the king of Electrical Engineering.
This subject is the most ignored one by Electrical GATE Aspirants. But it has been seen in the recent years that the weightage of EMT has been increasing and now it accounts for almost 5 marks every year. It was interesting to see that questions were based on basic physics like the charge resides on surface of conductor and if one prepared EMT well, it could have been easy scoring. So, a word of advice for GATE 2018 aspirants is not to take EMT lightly.
As usual the weightage of Engineering Maths was somewhere between 12-15 marks. But this the most interesting aspect of Engineering Maths was that questions were based on in depth understanding and were not just calculative like there was one question based on uniqueness of solution of differential equation which had to be solved using Uniqueness Theorem. So, definitely the GATE Authorities raised the bar with Engineering Maths this time.
Usually Electrical GATE Aspirants neglect Measurement as an unimportant subject and this belief was consolidated by the fact that last year weightage of Measurement was just 2 marks. But this year again the weightage of Measurement was increased to 4 marks and the questions asked were based on Error Analysis and Electromechanical Instruments and CRO.
Not to mention, Networks is most basic and one of the most important subject in Electrical Engineering and it is reflected in its weightage in GATE exam. The questions asked from Networks were mostly based on basics like solving networks or applying Network Theorems and one or two questions were also based on Two-Port Networks.
The weightage of Power Electronics was very high and the questions were spread across different chapters but this year the most dominant ones were Phase Controlled Converters and Inverters. The questions were a little bit tricky which required the students to carefully read the question once and the answer may have revealed itself. There were not a lot of formulas used so once again strong concepts were required.
The weightage of Power Systems was not uniform in both sets and in second set the weightage was reduced. The surprising thing this year was that majority of questions were based on Load Flow Analysis which is usually not taken very seriously. Rest of the questions were based mostly on Transmission Lines and this year very less weightage was given to Fault Analysis. Power System Protection was not at all asked.
This subject is not taught at many universities in Electrical Engineering but this is one of the most important subject when it comes to GATE exam. In this year the weightage was around 10 Marks and the questions were mainly centred around LTI Systems.
This section was pretty simple and Numerical Aptitude and Reasoning dominated Verbal Ability. Verbal counted for about 4 marks whereas Numerical Ability accounted for about 11 Marks.

GATE 2017 Vs GATE 2016?

One of the most asked question by GATE Aspirants is that how was this year’s paper compared to last year. So, I can point out a few differences,
  • This year’s exam was a bit more typical as compared to GATE 2016 but definitely simpler than GATE 2015.
  • The questions were such that there can easily be a mistake committed. So, a lot of students committed mistakes and ended up losing marks.
  • The questions were asked from topics that are usually neglected and ignored.
  • The questions were lengthier as compared to last year.
  • Few questions were specially targeted to test the basics in different subjects.

Session-1 Vs Session-2

The overall toughness level was uniform in both sets but Session-2 was more calculation intensive and time consuming. So, overall, session-2 students may get the benefit of normalization.
NAT Vs MCQ Type Questions
In Technical Section, the weightage of MCQ type questions was 47 Marks and the weightage of NAT Questions was 38 Marks.
In Aptitude section all questions were MCQ Type.
Verdict
  • Most of the students lost marks this year due to exam temperament as they attempted the exam in a rush. This lead to ignorance of some points given in the question leading to incorrect answer.
  • The weightage of NAT Questions has been gradually building up over the years and the problem of accuracy in such questions is vital to GATE Results.
  • Many Students ignore Engineering Maths and General Aptitude throughout the year and focus only on Technical Subjects which led to their downfall in GATE 2017.
  • Cut-off shall remain almost same as previous year.
  • Average scores will be less than GATE 2016 but more than GATE 2015 and topper shall lie somewhere between 80-85 marks.
 Recommendations for GATE 2018
  • Prepare all chapters equally well within a subject.
  • Do not ignore Engineering Maths and General Aptitude.
  • Focus on accuracy more than speed initially.
  • Create proper strategy and schedule for GATE 2018
  • Do not keep any presumptions about the exam.
  • Seek advice from only those who themselves have cracked the exam to avoid misguidance because “You may find many roads but only a few of them will lead to your destination”.
